Meet the Judges
Carrie Nicastro Ruiz

Carrie Nicastro Ruiz is a Chicago-based professional dancer, teacher and choreographer. She spent her early years studying the Cecchetti Ballet syllabus, and continued training on work/study at Visceral Dance Center, on full scholarship at the Lou Conte Dance Studio and at the University of Iowa (BA in Dance/Psychology). Company credits include: Thodos Dance Chicago, Giordano Jazz Dance Chicago, Same Planet Different World Dance Theatre, Hedwig Dances, Level Dance, and Hanna Brictson & Dancers. Teaching credits include: Academy of Dance Arts (Faculty), and Steps Dance Center (Contemporary/Modern Program Director, Company Director). Carrie has received numerous awards for her choreography, and has been honored twice by the Industry Dance Awards (2015-People's Choice Finalist, 2019- Best Convention Performance Winner). You can also spot Carrie in the New York Times Bestseller, “Dancers Among Us”, and in the October 2018 issue of Dance Spirit Magazine, where she is featured in the article, “Poetry in Motion”.

Richard Philion

Originally from British Columbia, Canada, Richard trained at Canada’s National Ballet School and the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School. He had the opportunity to perform with the National Ballet of Canada numerous times including the world premiere of John Alleyne’s Tristan and Isolde and was one of the first male dancers to achieve his advanced certification in the Cecchetti method of ballet in Western Canada. Other career highlights have included productions of: Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Promises, Promises, Singin’ in the Rain, Sweet Charity, Guys and Dolls, Beauty and the Beast, Jean Ann Ryan Productions, Royal Caribbean Productions (including Dancing with the Stars’ Louis Van Amstel’s production of Invitation to Dance), Albany Berkshire Ballet, Sarah Berges Contemporary Dance, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, Dance Theatre Northwest, Galan Entertainment’s Tango Buenos Aires and the APEC Summit in Vladivostok, Russia. He frequently teaches all over the United States and Canada.

Nicole Wasserman

A Southern California native, Nicole Wasserman grew up training under the direction of former Joffrey ballerina Elizabeth Huebner and master teacher Huggy Ford. She later spent several years traveling the country on scholarship with Tremaine Dance Conventions and The Pulse. Nicole was able to study under and assist faculty such as Doug Caldwell, Brian Friedman, and Mia Michaels to name a few. She then went on to receive her bachelor’s degree in Theatre Arts from California State University, Long Beach. Nicole has been sharing her love of dance for the last 20+ years through teaching, and her choreography has been performed at the Latin Music Awards as well as competition stages all over the United States. She currently resides in Louisiana, teaching and choreographing at award winning studios around the state. She recently accepted a position teaching dance at Louisiana State University, and has enjoyed working with the students there. Nicole is thrilled to be spending the weekend with VIP and can't wait to see what the dancers have to share!
